CITY PROPOSES “INTERSTATE DEVELOPMENT DISTRICT” FOR 70-ACRE PRESTON AVENUE PROPERTY
The City hopes to adopt a new zoning district for the 70-plus acre Hall Farm property at 436-444 Preston Avenue.
This new district would propose a mix of commercial and residential development for the property located within the triangle formed by I-91, I-691/Route 66 and Preston Avenue. This location provides excellent access to the regional transportation system. Meriden’s 2009 Plan of Conservation and Development designates the property as a growth area. A draft of the new district zoning will be reviewed by the Meriden Planning Commission this month. The new zone will permit a mix of businesses, including shops, restaurants, banks, offices and hotels as well as residential units.
CITY ACQUIRES PROPERTY KEY TO REDEVELOPING BROWNFIELD SITE
The City recently acquired a vacant medical office building located at 116 Cook Avenue. 116 Cook Ave consists of 2.8 acres of land improved with a four-story 74,381 square foot building and associated paved parking for 220 vehicles. Reuse plans call for 116 Cook and the adjacent Factory H brownfield site to be redeveloped into mixed use retail, office and residential uses. The City expects to demolish the Factory H buildings by the end of this year. USEPA has committed $2.5 million in grant funding to the project. A project advisory committee composed of community stakeholders and City staff guide the revitalization work.
$250,000 GRANT SUPPORTS MIDSTATE MEDICAL CENTER'S EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT EXPANSION
A recent $250,000 federal grant award will allow MidState Medical Center to acquire equipment for the $45.5 million dollar, 100,000 sq ft expansion project to be completed in two phases. The new emergency department will be completed by March of this year and renovation of the existing facility will be finished by September. The new department will more than double the hospital’s ER capacity and streamline operations to enhance patient flow while allowing for more immediate specialized care in an emergency. It will add 53 treatment spaces and 14 surgical inpatient beds, including separate treatment sections for minor injuries and major emergency procedures. U.S. Rep. Christopher S. Murphy, D-5th District, announced the grant award and toured the facility in January.
